As many take a stand against and speak up about the injustices facing our African-American communities, we at NAMI North Texas feel that it is our responsibility to do the same. The African-American community has been a victim of heinous acts of discrimination since the beginning of our nation. Although it is true that great progress has been made since that time, discrimination against the African-American community continues. This is evident in both recent and past events that have resulted in many lives being disrupted, traumatized, and even taken. It is our duty as citizens of this great country to acknowledge these acts and effects of discrimination so that we may begin to reconcile them and prevent future occurrences. We at NAMI North Texas understand the effects of discrimination very well due to our ongoing efforts to reduce the stigma of mental health conditions through education, raising awareness, support and advocacy. We carry out these efforts with determination and compassion. In addition, it is very important to us that these efforts are open and available to people of all colors, ages, genders, backgrounds, religions, and life styles. We will continue to maintain these standards because the stigma we face affects us all.
We at NAMI North Texas mourn the loss of the many African-American lives that have occurred in this country. We stand against the injustices facing the African-American community because they are a product of discrimination which obstructs our mission to help all people affected by mental health conditions. We stand with the African-American community and invite all Americans to join us as we continue to educate, support, raise awareness and advocate.
